Fleeting Impressions: Interactions between Strangers

My photographs are the product of a set of systematic manipulations that result in an image that is generated by that system rather than by my own subjective choices. While systematic work of other artists usually focuses on the organization of neutral forms (lines, shapes, colors) I manipulate photographic images of people thus adding an additional layer of meaning to what would otherwise be a purely formal exercise. The systematic manipulations of the photographs result in a series of images that are initially difficult to read, yet given time and examination, can be pieced back together into a loosely translated version of the original. In the context of portraiture, this process of surpassing the unrecognizable surface to comprehend an underlying identity becomes synonymous with the process of getting to know a stranger.
