The Middle Passage
selenium toned silver gelatin print
9.5"x14"
2005

This is one image from a series of three. Alex, the model, is depicted in a dump and a leveled cemetary. He creates places for himself out of the things that he finds in the dump and spaces that he alters for his purpose. He attempts to create what he understands as an adult life: a living room, a back yard (complete with a screen door and a grill) and a space to remember and drink. He uses the play that he learned as a child to create these spaces. In this specific image, Alex is reading in his living room inside an empty dumpster, with his constructed housemate, Joel, sitting next to him.

This image was featured on the cover of the Avatar literary magazine.
