(All that's Past) Between
silver gelatin prints, mixed media
15"x16"
2005

These are the three main images of an altar-based photographic installation. I created the altar in an outdoor brick courtyard with the three main images resing on shelves mounted directly onto the brick wall. The prints were framed in glass edged by electrical tape. The installation also included six 7"x8" prints in standard 8x10 frames and a number of test prints with writing on the back.

This work reflects on the blurring of lines between individual and cultural memory. The places where the models are depicted are part of their cultural past, but the models have never engaged with them. These are young people engaging with old places that they have never known, but still hold some attachment to. The places are all abandoned and slowly being destroyed; the people find them falling into ruin much like thier childhoods.

1. Alex at the old Irish and Italian cemetary at Clifton Park, Baltimore. The cemetary has since been leveled to make way for a golf course. Alex is shown among the piled and overgrown headstones.

2. Jeff at the Flat Tops in Lexington Park. This low-income housing district has fallen into ruin since the naval air station's fly over zone was expanded over it and the state took away its residential license. The tenants are still being relocated, but there is virtualy no low income housing left in St. Mary's County. There has been talk of converting the area to a park or a Super WalMart.

3. Amy at the Enchanted Forest amusement park. Half of this park still exists, lying in ruins. The other half was leveled to make way for a strip mall.
