I find my inspiration from the time I spend on the water. On the water all things are fluid, they have a natural sort of movement. Growing up in rural St. Mary’s has meant always interacting with the water and over time water has become a part of me. This close relationship is the focus of my current artwork.
Balance, speed, and movement are all things that I am deeply involved with. When sailing, I balance with nature and become one with it. The speed comes from how sails and keels harness the awesome force of the wind. These dynamics are true of surfing too. A surfboard is shaped to move with the wave; its lines and contours are designed to maximize the energy created by the water, and to me, this makes it one of the greatest sculptures ever. I believe art should aspire to these types of relationships; as a sail is designed to capture as much wind as possible, so to an artwork should be designed to capture the maximum imagination of the viewer.
