Amber Fryza artworks

To understand who we are as individuals I believe we need to first understand where we come from. My goal with this body of work is to expose some aspects of who I am and experiences I’ve gone through. After creating photographs that capture aspects of myself by referencing specific personal and emotional moments that I’ve experienced, I alter the images in ways that adds sculptural space to artworks that would normally lay flat on the wall.

The images I selected for this exhibition represent moments from my past that I feel have made an impact on who I have become. Some aspects of my physical/emotional experiences are represented in the work through the use of props and staged environments. I intentionally integrated tactile objects and materials such as acrylic paint and Plexiglas into the work as a way to create a more tangible experience for the viewer. My goal is to amplify the physicality of certain aspects of the image, to draw the viewer’s attention to that area, and to trigger the properties and associations that these materials evoke. These alterations are meant to inject a different tone or experience in order to capture all aspects of that moment in time, including the physicality of things you can see and the personal logic you cannot.
