This article is a good start to understanding the idea of Insidious Trauma and how some scholars have tried to change the way we view trauma to include oppressed peoples.

This book features an in-depth look at women and self-portraiture and displays images and some critical analysis of women artists’ self-portraits.

This source has numerous essays, interviews and images. The source also features some of Bourgeois’ own writings, poems, and interpretations.

Herrera, Hayden. 1991. Frida Kahlo: The Paintings. New York: HarperCollins
Publishers.
This source offers critical analysis of Frida Kahlo’s paintings. Many of the paintings selected for the book are dated between the years of 1930-1949.

This source offers an indepth history of women and self-portraiture and offers some critical analysis of some self-portraits by women artists.

Munro, Eleanor. 2000. Originals: American Women Artists. New York: Da Capo Press.
This was my starting point to finding artists that explored similar content to my own. I was also able to find other sources from this book.

Orenstein, P. 1995. Schoolgirls:Young Women, Self-Esteem, and the Confidence Gap. New York: Random House, Inc.
This is a very compelling piece of journalism that goes beyond simple statistics. Orenstein shows us the girls behind the statistics and their stories.

There are many references to Maria Root in this article. Maria root is a major influence on studies of oppressed people. I am not having much luck finding any of her books yet, but this article on her public-talk is a good way to get an idea of her work.

This article features an interview with Kiki Smith and some critical analysis of her work.

Posner, Helaine. 1998. Kiki Smith. Boston : Bulfinch.
Posner interprets some of Kiki Smith’s work in a chronological timeline.

Sadker, M., and Sadker, D. 1994. Failing at Fairness: How America’s Schools Cheat Girls. New York: Charles Scribner’s Sons, Macmillan Publishing Company.
The Sadkers were the pioneers of research on gender bias in schools. Many sources, including Orenstein, the American Association of University Women, and Woolfolk reference their work.

This book features images and analysis of Cindy Sherman’s work.

Smith, Kiki. 1998. Kiki Smith: Works 1988-1996. Koln : Salon Verlag.
I used this book for images of Kiki Smith’s work.

Woolfolk, A. 2004. Educational Psychology. (9th ed.) Boston: Allyn and Bacon.
This is an excellent Teacher’s Education book that led me to other great resources.
