Annotated Bibliography

 

1.) Bernadac, Marie-Laure. Louise Bourgeois. Flammarion. Paris-New York, 1996.
A detailed overview of the artist's work, history and intentions is organized by thematic grouping of the artist's work. Included is biographic information, a career timeline and direct quotes from the artist.

2.) Blumenthal, Eileen and Julie Taymor. Julie Taymor: Playing with Fire. Harry N. Abrams, Inc., Publishers. New York, 1995.
A biography of Taymor's professional work in theater, opera and film. Of particular interest were the sections on puppetry and mask work. In depth examinations of past and recent productions are given, with analysis of the traditions that Taymor draws inspiration from.

3.) Calvesi, Maurizio. Caravaggio. Giunti Publishing Group, Florence. 1998.
A general overview of Caravaggio's life and work, this book concentrates on the church altarpieces Caravaggio was commissioned to do throughout his career and his well-known secular work. Present are some biographical tidbits.

4.) Rheims, Maurice. Hector Guimard. Harry N. Abrams, Inc., Publishers. New York, 1988.
This is a large volume containing and explaining the masses of Art Nouveau architecture that Guimard was responsible for designing. Useful perhaps more for the reproductions, there is not much textural information, but small descriptions placing each work in the context of its environment and history are given.

5.) Hagen, Uta with Haskel Frankel. Respect for Acting. Macmillan Publishing, Inc. New York, 1973.
A catalogue of Hagen's approach to acting through suggested exercises, anecdotes from her acting career and stated philosophy.

4.) Meyer, Susan E. A Treasury of the Great Children's Book Illustrators. Harry N. Abrams, Inc. New York. 1983. (Pp.157-175)
This contains general overviews of the nineteenth/early-twentieth century 'big guns' of children's book illustration history (as well as illustration in general), including Arthur Rackham and his peers.

6.) Petterson, Jan Ake. Odd Nerdrum: StoryTeller and Self-Revealer. Schehoug & Co. Oslo, Norway, 1998.

An in depth delve into the artistic past and present of Norwegian artist Odd Nerdrum. A chronology of his work is given with excellent color reproductions. Interview quotes are included, giving a colorful impression of the artist. A biographical and chronological overview are included in the text, which give important information and slight aid in the interpretation of Nerdrum's works.

7.) Storr, Robert. Guston. Abbeville Press, New York. 1986.
A concise but dense bio and examination of Philip Guston's life and work, documenting the 'periods' of his style changes with separate chapters corralling each 'change'.

8.) White, Christopher and Quentin Buvelot. Rembrandt by Himself. Yale University Press. London, 1999.
Large happy volume encompassing the huge series of Rembrandt's self-portraits. Rembrandt's role in the history of self-portraiture is clearly defined, and individual works are put into the context of their execution.
